Fillings are done by removing the decay and replacing the affected tooth structure. It is called a filling because a new material fills the hole that the decay left. Caught early enough, cavities can be treated easily and painlessly. Left untreated, the decay can lead to tooth pain and or infection.
Bonding involves adhering composite resin material that is matched to the color of the tooth, to the surface of the tooth. This is accomplished to repair the damage done to the tooth by decay, alter the alignment of the tooth, close gaps between teeth, or for cosmetic purposes.
Veneers are a cosmetic dental procedure in which a covering is placed over the visible area of the tooth. This is a terrific option to restore a smile for someone with discolored or small teeth.
Crowns are restorations that are used to cover a tooth that is likely to break or is too broken down to be restored with a filling. They are most commonly done after root canal treatment, or when a large filling wears out. The larger the cavity the more likely a crown will be needed. This type of restoration gives full coverage to the weakened tooth, providing strength and protecting the tooth against fracture.
Root canal treatment or endodontic therapy is necessary when a cavity extends to the pulp. Sometimes deep restorations or trauma to a tooth may cause the nerve to be damaged to the point it needs root canal therapy. Once this occurs, the pulp becomes infected and can even extend through the root tip and begin to eat away at the surrounding bone. By the time the pulp is infected, it cannot heal on its own and must be treated. Symptoms can range from sensitivity to extreme pain. Sometimes, however, no symptoms are apparent.
A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. Two types of dentures are available - complete and partial dentures. Complete dentures are used when all the teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain. Both types of dentures share one common function. They replace teeth that have become loose or been lost.
A dental implant is an option to replace a missing tooth or teeth. In this procedure, a small titanium shaft is surgically implanted into the bone and allowed to integrate. The bone grows around it forming a tight connection, which additionally slows or stops the bone loss that inevitably occurs when the root of a natural tooth is missing. Once the implant is firmly set in the jawbone, a small connector post, called an abutment, is connected to the post to securely hold the new crown. Because the implant is secured to the jawbone, it will look, feel, and function like one's natural teeth!
A tooth extraction may be necessary for many reasons, including severe damage, crowded teeth, severe gum disease, or severe decay. One of the most common dental procedures, a tooth extraction may be necessary if your tooth has been badly damaged past the point of repair. In addition, it can eliminate bacteria and improve your overall oral health.
